Hamill Third in 5,000 Meters at NCAA Outdoor Championships

May 28, 2002

ST. PAUL, MN Amherst College rookie sensation Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) finished third overall with a time of 16:56.62 in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, hosted by Macalester College. Hamill who won the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March crossed the tape behind first-place finisher Mary Proulx of Keene State College (16:50.52) and runner-up Nicole Cueno of Grinell College (16:54.42).

Hamill earned All-American honors and won the 5,000-meter race in a scorching 17:11.93 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Ohio Northern University in March. The win bolstered a stellar rookie campaign for Hamill, who shattered previous school records in the 1,500-meter, 3,000-meter, and 5,000-meter events earlier in the season.

Hamill earned All-American honors on the cross-country team in November as well, en route to the squad's seventh-place finish at the NCAA National Championships.
