LEWISTON, ME - The Amherst College women's squad placed seventh at the NESCAC Outdoor Track and Field 2002 Championships on Saturday at Bates College, while the Jeff men followed up with a ninth-place showing of their own. Meanwhile, Williams College defended its 2001 crown, locking up the seventh championship in nine years for the women, and the tenth in eleven years for the men.

First-year Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) was a bright spot for the Amherst women. Henry placed second in the 100-meter hurdles, and then notched fourth-place finishes in the long jump and the triple jump. Meanwhile, first-year standout Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) brought home a third-place finish in the grueling 10,000 meter run. Senior Rebecca Woo (Manchester, NH) took fourth place in the 800 meter run, and senior Amie Shei (Lexington, MA) made her mark with two seventh place finishes, in the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter run. The Jeff relay teams put together a third-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay, and a fifth-place finish in the 4x100 relay.

On the men's side, first-year Nathaniel Mahlberg (Madison, WI) led the charge. Mahlberg's fifth-place run through the 110 meter hurdles and fourth-place tear through the 400 meter hurdles supplemented eighth-place finishes from sophomore Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) in the 200 meter dash, and from junior Brian Hart (Rutland, VT) in the 400 meter run. The relay teams rounded out the Jeff scoring for the day. The 4x100-meter relay team notched fifth place, and the Jeff men combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

On Saturday, the women will head to Williams and the men will head to Springfield College, for the Division III Championships. Both meets are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
