MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College men's basketball team jumped into a tie for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 73-59 win at conference and Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday night. Amherst sophomore guard Adam Harper (Washington, DC) led all scorers with 20 points, while junior center Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the Jeffs improved to 15-5 overall and 3-3 in NESCAC play.

After trailing 19-18 with 6:52 left in the first half, Amherst ended the period with a 19-8 run for a 37-27 edge at the break. Junior forward Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA), who posted his 500th career rebound in the game after scoring his 1,000th career point at Salve Regina on Tuesday, poured in seven of his 13 points during the barrage.

Wesleyan scored the first four points of the second half but watched helplessly as Amherst opened up, and maintained, a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the game.

The Jeffs placed four players in double figures, with sophomore guard John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) joining Harper, Fitzsimons and Zieja with 12 points. Senior preseason All-American Leo Jones paced Wesleyan (12-8/2-4 NESCAC) with 18 points and 14 rebounds in defeat.

The win was Amherst's second of the season over Wesleyan after an 85-74 home victory on January 15, ensuring at least a partial share of the Little Three title with Williams College.

The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. at Connecticut College, who is currently tied with Amherst for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 3-3 league mark (12-8 overall).
