NEWPORT, RI - Junior tri-captain forward Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) cracked the career 1,000-point plateau with 16 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the Amherst College men's basketball team rolled to a 75-56 non-conference win at Salve Regina University on Tuesday. Junior center Pat Fitzsimons (Durham, NC) matched Zieja with a team-high 16 points on perfect 8-for-8 shooting, with six points coming on a trio of dunks in the first half.

Zieja, who entered the game with 999 points after a career-high 34-point outburst in Saturday's 110-107 triple-overtime loss to Trinity College, scored his 1,000th and 1,001st points just 44 seconds into the game on a mid-range jumper from the left wing - part of a 22-4 Amherst run to start the game. Six different players scored during the barrage, capped by a pair of layups by first-year forward Andrew Schiel (Abbington, PA) with 12:50 left before the break.

Salve Regina (14-6), which entered the game with a four-game winning streak and a 6-2 record in Commonwealth Coast Conference play, clawed back into contention by scoring 23 of the game's next 35 points, cutting its deficit to just seven, 34-27. Zieja reclaimed the momentum for the Jeffs with a silky turnaround jumper inside the half's final minute and - after a layup by Salve Regina's Greg Kawula (Ridgewood, NJ) - Amherst sophomore guard John Donovan (Holmdel, NJ) nailed a running one-hander at the buzzer, stretching the visitors' halftime lead to 38-29.

The Jeffs began the second half much like the first - with a 15-6 run that included four easy lay-ins by Zieja and Fitzsimons. Much like the first half the host Seahawks countered with a run of their own, scoring nine unanswered points, keyed by a three-point play by junior guard Tom Morrisey (Stratford, CT) at the 9:54 mark. A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Adam Harper (Washington, DC) and Zieja's second three-pointer put the Jeffs back on track, however, and Amherst expanded its bulge to as many as 19 points down the stretch.

Joining Zieja and Fitzsimons in double figures, Schiel poured in 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting, highlighted by a thunderous breakaway dunk off a perfect pass from junior point guard Ryan Faulkner (Lebanon, NH) midway through the first half. Salve Regina placed three players in double figures, led by Morrisey's 14 points.

Amherst, now 14-5 on the season, returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
