Men's Hoop Falls at Williams, 74-45

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - In both teams' NESCAC men's basketball opener, Williams College (12-2/1-0 NESCAC) held visiting Little Three rival Amherst College (10-3/0-1 NESCAC) to just 24.6 percent (14-for-57) shooting en route to a 74-45 conference win Friday night at Chandler Gymnasium. Williams' victory snapped a four-game Amherst winning streak in the series, avenging the Jeffs' 72-70 overtime win last Saturday night in Amherst.

The two teams played to a 7-7 standoff over the game's first 3:48 with Williams sophomore guard Michael Crotty (Belmont, MA) and Amherst second-year sharpshooter Adam Harper (Washington, DC) trading three-pointers early on. Junior forward Tim Folan (Kensington, MD), who saw limited action due to early foul trouble, then sparked a 17-3 Eph run with his only bucket of the game - a three-pointer from the left wing with 15:49 left before halftime. The Jeffs managed just one field goal - a long range trifecta by first-year forward Andrew Schiel (Abbington, PA) - during a 10:54 stretch in the first half and were never able to recover, despite an offensive tip-in at the buzzer by junior tri-captain Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) that cut Amherst's deficit to 33-22 at the break.

Williams then opened the second half with a 26-11 run and led by as many as 31 points down the stretch to cement the blowout win.

Junior forward Drew DeMuth (Carlisle, PA) paced a pair of Williams players in double figures with game-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Crotty added 14 points on the strength of a trio of three-pointers. Zieja was the lone Amherst player in double figures with 10 points.

The Ephs outrebounded the jeffs 40-30, with most of the damage inflicted by DeMuth on the defensive glass.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. at NESCAC rival Middlebury College.
