Jeffs Fall to Host Embry-Riddle at Bahama House Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Playing its first game since a since a 74-47 home win over Worcester State on December 11, the Amherst College men's basketball team returned to action on New Year's Day with a 93-86 loss to host Embry-Riddle University in the first round of the Bahama House Classic. Amherst, ranked 12th in the nation according to the latest Basketball America Division III Top 25 poll, posted just its second loss of the season, falling to 6-2 overall.

Junior forward Steve Zieja (Hadley, MA) paced the visitors with his fourth double-double of the season, pouring in a game-high 20 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. First-year forward Andrew Schiel (Abbington, PA) also reached double figures in scoring and rebounding with 13 points and 10 boards.

Meanwhile, senior Ryan Rothrock scored 19 points, including 18 in the second half, to lead Embry-Riddle, ranked ninth in the nation in NAIA Division II with an 11-3 record. Rothrock also dished out six assists and was one of six Eagles in double figures. Newcomer Jeff Agba posted his second consecutive double-double in his first career start with 13 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

In Monday's other first-round game, Luke Hudson poured in 24 points to lead Berea (KY) College past Mohawk (Ontario) College, 80-68. Berea improved to 5-8 with the win, while Mohawk fell to 6-13.

The tournament concludes on Wednesday with Amherst facing Berea at 2 p.m. and Embry-Riddle hosting Mohawk at 4 p.m.
