April 30, 2002

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College baseball team downed visiting non-league foe Springfield College, 11-1, Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field. The Jeffs pounded out 14 hits in the game and tallied five runs in the bottom of the fifth on their way to victory. First-year outfielder David Powers (Andover, MA) had a huge day at the plate for Amherst, going 4-for-4 while knocking in five runs.

The hosts jumped on the visitors early in the contest. Powers singled with one out in the bottom of the first, driving in a pair of runners to put Amherst ahead 2-0. The Jeffs added another pair of runs in the third when junior catcher Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Powers, who led off the inning with a double. Senior first baseman Jim Hochrein (Greenfield, MA) then doubled in another run extending the advantage to 5-0.

Amherst blew the game wide-open in the fifth when Katuska smacked a lead-off homer over the fence. Shortly thereafter, sophomore outfielder Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) bashed a two-run shot over the wall, giving the hosts a comfortable 9-0 lead. Amherst tacked on another pair of runs in the inning, while Springfield tallied their lone run in the top of the seventh when first-year infielder Matt Talbot (Athol, MA) walked with the bases loaded. Moments later, the threat came to an end when senior outfielder Andrew Huck (Casco, ME) grounded out to the pitcher.

First-year hurler Patrick Mawn (Wilton, CT) earned his first win of the season for the Jeffs, while sophomore pitcher Todd Royce (Chester, NH) took the loss for Springfield.

With the victory, Amherst improves to 17-14 overall, while the Pride fall to 15-18. Amherst returns to action on either Thursday or Friday afternoon (TBA) against NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College, the winner advancing to the postseason.
