HARTFORD, CT - After sweeping a three-game set against visiting NESCAC West Division foe Hamilton College, the Amherst College baseball team pounded out 20 hits to defeat host Trinity College, 16-3, Tuesday afternoon. Junior catcher Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) and sophomore outfielder Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) each homered for the Jeffs.

Amherst did the brunt of the damage in the fifth inning. First-year outfielder David Powers (Andover, MA) led off and was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles by junior outfielder Jarret Solomon (Simsbury, CT) and senior John Brody (Baltimore, MD) then loaded the bases for Katuska, who knocked in a pair of runners with a single to left field. Whiting then came up to blast a three-run homer over the left field wall, giving the Jeffs a 10-1 advantage.

Amherst junior hurler Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL) improved to 3-0, while Bantam pitcher Mark Mahoney fell to 2-2. With the victory, the Jeffs overall record improves to 15-13, while Trinity, ranked-eighth in the latest New England Division III College Coaches Poll, falls to 19-9.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon for a doubleheader against visiting Little Three rival Williams College. The Jeffs then travel to Williams for a game on Sunday, needing a pair of wins over the course of the weekend to qualify for the NESCAC Championship Tournament.
