Amherst Captures the Little III Title
82-75 victory over rival Wesleyan gives Jeffs the crown

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Avenging an early season loss to Wesleyan, the Amherst College Lord Jeffs defeated the Cardinals when it mattered most, with the Little III Title on the line. Both Amherst and Wesleyan had recorded wins against Williams and tonight's showdown was for all the marbles.

Led by a diverse array of scorers, the Lord Jeffs overcame 24 points apeice from Wesleyan forward and guard tandem Mark Zubko and Sean O'Brien. For Amherst, senior Caith Chapman and junior Hugh Quattlebaum notched 14 points while sophomore Erik Kelly added 13 from the bench. On senior night, the men of the hour scored 35 of the team's 82 points (42.6%) and came up big during crucial junctures of the contest (Chapman 14, Anish 9, Ingraham 8, Field 4).

Amherst dominated the momentum and pace of the game throughout but were forced to stave off several Cardinal scoring flurries in the second half. The Cardinals opened up the second by outscoring the Jeffs 8-2 and cutting the 43-34 halftime lead to just three. After calling a timeout, the Jeffs took control of the next five minutes and returned the favor, outscoring Wesleyan by a 16-6 clip. Junior forward Jackson Collins once again gave the Jeffs a much needed energy boost from the bench. The Jeffs all-around man made several key blocks and rebounds during the retaliatory run and ended his stint with a thundering one-hand slam that forced Wesleyan coach Gerry McDowell to call a timeout to stop the deluge. The Cards made a final push with four minutes to go in regulation, once again cutting the lead to just three, but solid Amherst free-throw shooting down the stretch by Chapman, Kelly, and Brian Daoust iced the title for the Jeffs.
