Senior Captains Lead Trinity Men's Basketball past Amherst

HARTFORD,Connecticut -- Senior co-captain forwards Kevin Bednar and John Mulfinger combined for 37 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 81-75 overtime win over NESCAC rival Amherst College.

Trinity battled back from a deficit that reached as high as nine points in the second half, finally tying the score on a long three-pointer by sophomore guard Brian LaBella with 17 seconds left. The Bantams stopped the Lord Jeffs last second attempt, as sophomore guard Brian Daoust's layup rolled off the rim

In the overtime, Trinity went on an 11-0 run, following an Amherst three by junior guard Pat Mulvey that had given the Jeffs the lead at 72-69. Senior center Jason Levin keyed the run with a layup and three foul shots.

Amherst controlled the majority of the game, especially in the first half, building a 28-21 lead with 4:43 to go until intermission. Mulfinger cut the lead to one at 31-30 with a three-point play on a pretty drive with 2:40 left in the half. Mulfinger finished with 18 points and six boards, while Bednar had a game-high 19 and 12 boards. Mulvey paced the Lord Jeffs with 17 points.

The win puts the 11-1 back on track after a tough 68-63 overtime loss at Springfield last week. The Jeffs fall to 8-4.
