Nation's Top Team Conn College Topples Amherst
Camels get over the hump to stay undefeated

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- The number-one ranked team in Division III proved why they belong in another class. The undefeated Connecticut College Camels defeated the Amherst College Lord Jeffs tonight 95-84. The win gives Conn College their 23rd consecutive win of the season and solidifies their top ranking.

The strength and depth of the Camels proved to be too much for the Jeffs to handle. With an entourage of fresh legs and inside muscle, the Camels withstood several Lord Jeff rallies and utilized their size advantage in the second half. After taking a 16 point lead in to the break, the Jeffs came out of the gates strong in the second. Amherst cut the lead to eight with ten minutes to play, but would never get beyond that barrier. On the strength of 59% shooting the the second half and 18/24 shooting from the foul-line, the Camels were never really forced to shoot from the outside in the second frame. Center Zach Smith and sharp-shooter Dwayne Stallings paced the Camels. Smith scored 18 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds while Stallings poured in 23 points including 4 three-pointers in the first three and a half minutes of the game.

The several Amherst runs were sparked by sophomore point guard Brian Daoust, who led the Jeffs with 19 points. Behind Daoust, the Jeffs cut the Conn lead to just 5 in the first-half after being down 24-7. Amherst finishes the regular season on Saturday evening (7:30) at home versus the Wesleyan University Cardinals for the Little III title.
