AMHERST, Massachusetts
It was the tale of two halves at Amherst College on Saturday,
as the host Lord Jeffs used dominating third and fourth quarters
to roll to a 28-14 victory over Little III rival Wesleyan University.
The 105th meeting between the traditional foes had all the makings
of a Wesleyan blowout in the first half, with the Cardinals jumping
out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. But as the Amherst
defense began to slow the Cardinals down, the offense, led by
first-year tailback Kevin Kennard and sophomore wide receiver
Derrell Wright, who went to high school together at Western Reserve
Academy in Ohio, came to life.
The Jeffs scored three times in the final 6:59 of the half, on
a 1-yard run by Kennard, a 22-yard reception by Wright, and a
25-yard field goal from junior kicker Liam Flemming as time expired,
to take a 15-14 lead into halftime.
But while the first half was a back-and-forth battle between
the two NESCAC powers, the second half belonged to Amherst.
Behind a 19-play, 81-yard scoring drive that ate up 11:05 in
the third quarter, the Jeffs took a 21-14 lead that they would
not look back on, sealing the win 14 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Kennard, who finished with game and career highs in carries (29)
and yards (122), scored on a one-yard touchdown run to put the
game away.
The Cardinals would never get a chance to mount a comeback, thanks
to a stifling Amherst defense that limited the visitors to 22
net yards in the second half. Wesleyan quarterback Jake Fay was
only five of 18 for 76 yards, and standout wide receiver Matt
Perceval was held to two catches for 18 yards.
The Jeffs, who gained more than 400 yards for the first time
since 1997, also received 115 yards receiving from Wright, who
caught seven passes on the day from junior Amherst quarterback
Peter Honig. Honig finished 11 of 22 for 149 yards, while sophomore
tailback Okey Ugwonali added 76 yards of his own to the Jeffs'
256 total rushing yards.
The win improves the Jeffs to 3-2, heading into next Saturday's
away game at Tufts University, while Wesleyan, who fall to 3-2
with the loss, travels to Brunswick, Maine next Saturday to battle
the Bowdoin College Polar Bears.
