AMHERST, Massachusetts
The Amherst College football team broke into the win column on Saturday
with a 10-7 victory over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the
second game of the 1999 season for both teams.
Behind their 13-play, 74-yard opening drive, the Polar Bears
got on the scoreboard first, with Bowdoin quaterback Kyle Quinn
finding Jason Dewar for a four-yard touchdown pass to cap the
drive.
The Bears held the Jeffs to three-and-out on their first drive,
and Bowdoin was driving for another touchdown when Amherst junior
Tri-captain Brian Daoust picked off a Quinn pass to keep Bowdoin
from taking a two-touchdown lead.
From that point on, the game turned into a defensive battle,
with the Jeffs getting on the scoreboard courtesy of a 27-yard
field goal from freshman Mike Proman with 4:38 remaining in the
first half.
The game stayed at 7-3 midway into the fourth quarter, until
the Jeffs put together a 14-play, 55-yard drive capped off by
a dramatic fourth-and-goal play where Jeff junior quarterback
Peter Honig kept the ball on a naked bootleg and ran in for the
1-yard score.
Following the Amherst score, the Polar Bears turned the ball
over on downs. Bowdoin seemed destined to get the ball back one
more time until Amherst punter Liam Flemming perfectly executed
a fake punt on 4th-and-11, finding junior Dave Frankel for a 14-yard
completion. From there, the Jeffs killed the clock, taking the
10-7 victory.
Leading Amherst offensively were a pair of strong performances
from sophomore tailback Okey Ugwonali and sophomore wide receiver
Derrell Wright. Ugwonali earned career-highs in both carries (32)
and yards gained (92), while leading a running game that amassed
162 yards on the ground. Wright hauled in three passes for 82
yards, and also returned three punts for 56 yards.
For Bowdoin, Quinn finished 11 of 23 for 113 yards and a touchdown,
while the running-back duo of Chris Houston and Tim Lawson combined
for 77 yards on 25 carries.
Amherst (1-1) now looks ahead to next Saturday's home date against
Middlebury College, while the Polar Bears (0-2) travel to Medford,
Mass., to battle the Tufts University Jumbos. Today's win improves
Amherst's all-time record against their NESCAC rivals to 59-17-2,
avenging last year's 24-16 loss to the Polar Bears in Brunswick,
Maine.
