AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) dumped in a game-high 20 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead Amherst to a 65-49 win over Western New England College. The Jeffs jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of play as the Golden Bears committed seven fouls before the 15:00 minute mark. Amherst maintained its defensive intensity to force 16 first half turnovers and mount an 18-2 run late in the first half toward a 37-19 lead at the break.
Katie Hersey (Westford, MA) came alive in the second half as she hit three straight jumpers early on. Western New England trailed by as much as 30 with nine minutes to play before rookie Kathleen Reed (Cambridge, NY) fired off 15 of WNEC's final 19 points. The guard led the Golden Bears with 19 points and eight rebounds, while fellow first-year Erin Marino (Westerly, RI) put up 16 and pulled down 6.
Amherst had three players in double figures as Hersey finished with 12 and sophomore Naomi Sullivan (Hudson, MA) notched 13 points and five assists for the night. The Jeffs better their record to 2-1 while Western New England falls to 2-4. Amherst next travels to Coast Guard on Monday while WNEC will compete in the Manhattanville Alumni Tourney this weekend.
