Amherst Edges out Wesleyan, 63-60

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Senior Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) had a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds on senior day to lead Amherst College (15-9) to a 63-60 victory over NESCAC rival Wesleyan (6-17). This game finishes off the regular season for both teams and earns a split of the Little III title between Amherst and archrival Williams.

The Jeffs used a 15-1 run early in the first half to claim the lead behind Rinaldi and fellow tri-captains Katie Hersey (Westford, MA) and Janinne Noel (Dalton, MA). Amherst led by as much as 12 in the first before the Jeffs were whistled for a series of fouls and the Cardinals chipped away at the advantage from the free throw line. A steal and lay-in by rookie Julia Ames (Storm Lake, IA) pulled Wesleyan within five at the break, 29-24.

The tri-captains again mounted an Amherst run in the second, a 12-2 run that gave the Jeffs a 47-32 lead with 11:50 to play. A pair of Hersey free throws extended that to a 17-point advantage, 57-40, with 4:15 left on the game-clock, but the Jeffs were cold from the floor for the final four-and-a-half minutes of the game while Wesleyan began a 20-6 run. Senior Rachel Sanchez (San Antonio, TX) and junior Jill Pelletier (Bar Harbor, ME) converted three-point-plays to lead the Cardinal charge. Lynn St. Martin (Westport, MA) hit a 3-pointer with 1:24 to play to pull the Cardinals with 10, and a lay-in by Ames would bring Wesleyan within two, 62-60, with 3.6 seconds left. Noel hit a free throw with 0.2 ticks to finish the game.

Pelletier led Wesleyan with 16 points and six rebounds. Ames and Julie Bennett (Huntington, NY) each chipped in 12 for the Cardinals. Hersey added 14 for the Jeffs while Noel scored 13 for Amherst.
