Amherst Holds on to Defeat Tufts, 62-49

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Four Lord Jeffs posted double figures to lead Amherst (13-9) to a 62-49 victory over NESCAC rival Tufts (11-9). The Jeffs roared out to a 20-2 lead in the first seven minutes of play, but a tenacious Jumbo press generated the bulk of Tufts' points nearing the break.

While Amherst took a 29-18 advantage into the locker room, Tufts cut the lead to just two points with 17:40 to play on the second of two Carrie Hironaka (Honolulu, HI) 3-pointers. Amherst pushed its lead back to seven on a free throw by junior tri-captain Katie Hersey (Westford, MA) at the 15:27 mark. The Jumbos then mounted an 8-0 run behind defensive pressure to take the lead, 35-34, midway through the second on a drive by Nicole Bach (Staten Island, NY).

The teams flip-flopped leads until a lay-in by senior Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) gave Amherst the lead for good with 7:37 left on the game-clock. The Jeffs out-scored Tufts 23-9 in the remainder of the game as Hersey posted six of her 13 points from the charity stripe in that span.

Molly Baker (Northfield, MA) and Bach led the Jumbos with 12 points a piece as Baker also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Rinaldi led all scorers with 16 while junior Janinne Noel (Dalton, MA) chipped in 15 for Amherst. Hersey posted her 15th double-double of the season and 29th of her career with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Naomi Sullivan (Hudson, MA) rounded out the foursome of double-digit Jeffs with 10 points.
