AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Katie Hersey (Westford, MA), a junior forward for the Amherst College women's basketball team, was named the Player of the Week by four organizations, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and Columbus Multimedia, for games through February 8, 1998. This is the second time this season that the captain has thoroughly impressed New England basketball, as she has already earned the first trio of honors for her spectacular peformances of two weeks ago.
Hersey posted three more double-doubles as the junior brings her season total to 12, 26 for her career. The forward began the week with a career-high 31 points, including 13 at the free throw line to tie her own record for most in a single game. She added 13 rebounds and four steals in the Jeffs' 72-61 win over the Cardinals. Hersey followed up with 13 points and 15 rebounds as Amherst fell 71-63 to Norwich, but her 21 points and 11 rebounds led the Jeffs to a 76-40 road win over Hamilton. Also finishing the week with seven assists, seven steals and a block, Hersey is the Jeffs' leading rebounder (9.7 rpg) and scorer (15.5 ppg). She is in 6th place on Amherst's all-time scoring list with 882 points.
Amherst women's basketball is currently 12-6 as the squad will travel to Colby and Bowdoin this weekend for a pair of NESCAC battles. The Jeffs play at 7:00pm on Friday in Waterville, Maine, before heading to Brunswick for a 3:00pm tip-off on Saturday.
