AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Katie Hersey (Westford, MA), a junior forward for the Amherst College women's basketball team, was named Player of the Week by four organizations, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) and Columbus Multimedia, for games through January 18, 1998. This is the fourth time in her career that Hersey has received NESCAC honors and the first time she has been recognized as the ECAC New England Player of the Week.
Hersey registered a trio of double-doubles to push her season total to seven, 21 in her career. The junior began the week with a 19-point, 10-rebound performance against Albertus Magnus, while also dishing out five assists. Her 25-points and 12 rebounds at Babson extended the Jeffs' win streak to seven games, and Hersey's 13-for-16 free throws tied her own record for most in a single game. The forward rounded out the week with a 14-point, 10-rebound show against archrival Williams who handed Amherst only its second loss of the season, a close 71-65 decision before a crowd of 1,100 fans.
Amherst women's basketball is currently 7-2 as they prepare for a NESCAC showdown at 6-2 Trinity on Tuesday.
