Amherst Edges out Smith, 57-56

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Naomi Sullivan (Hudson, MA) sank a free throw with 1:35 on the clock to push Amherst to a 57-56 victory over Smith College in LeFrak Gymnasium. While the Pioneers held the last possession of the game, Smith missed a pair of shots against a tenacious Lord Jeff defense before the final buzzer.

Smith shot 53.3% in the first half toward a 12-point lead at the break. The Pioneers looked to junior post-players Christina Hobson (Ivoryton, CT) and Lisa Matter (Kettle Falls, WA) for 18 first half points and 11 rebounds combined.

The Jeffs opened up the second half with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 36-34 behind a handful of their 14 steals for the game. Amherst registered its first lead of the game since the opening bucket on Katie Hersey's (Westford, MA) second three-point play, 41-40, with 13:03 left in the half. Smith exploited the weak-side defense to re-claim an edge, though Amherst fought back to tie the match at 48, 52 and 54. Senior captain Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) sank a turnaround jumper with 2:41 left to play for the Jeffs' final lead of the game.

Rinaldi finished the game with a game-high 16 points. Teammate Hersey notched 15 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists for the Jeffs. Sullivan had six steals for Amherst. Hobson and Matter contributed 14 points a piece for Smith, whlie Hobson and sophomore Lauren Kernochan (Santa Monica, CA) each pulled down 13 rebounds for the Pioneers.

Amherst improves to 5-1 and will host Albertus Magnus on Tuesday at 7:30pm. Smith falls to 5-7 as the Pioneers look forward to the Tyler Invitational, in which they will face Wesleyan on Thursday.
