AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Katie Hersey (Westford, MA) put up a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Amherst to a 71-46 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The junior was a perfect 6-for-6 both on the floor and from the line as she registered her third double-double of the season.
While WPI opened the game with a three-pointer from rookie Lynn Michalenka (Lincoln, RI), Amherst mounted an 11-0 run behind Hersey and fellow captains Sarah Rinaldi (Washington, DC) and Janinne Noel (Dalton, MA). The Jeffs led by as much as 20 in the first half toward a 40-22 advantage at the break.
Amherst pushed the lead to 27 midway through the second half before both teams went on a four-minute shooting drought. The Engineers came back from their third timeout with a 12-2 run to cut the score to 61-44 with 4:06 to play. Sophomore Kate Burgess (Newport, ME) registered six of her team-high 15 points on two shots from behind the arc during the run.
WPI falls to 4-5 as they prepare to host Williams on Saturday. Amherst improves to 4-1 and will next host Smith on the 10th.
