Amherst Defeats Hamilton, 6-4

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Amherst rebounded nicely from last Sunday's loss in the McCabe Tournament finals with an ECAC East league win over Hamilton tonight in Amherst. Hamilton jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes, but the second half of the period was all Amherst as the Jeffs stormed back to take a 3-2 lead before the period was out. Sophomore defenseman Andy Jones (Excelsior, MN/Minnetonka) got the Jeffs started, converting a three-on-two pass from sophomore Buster Nelson (Middletown, CT/Taft) at 11:21. Junior forward Charlie Blyth (Beaconsfield, QUE/Choate) scored three and a half minutes later, walking into the slot and lifting a shot under the crossbar to tie the game at 2. Senior tri-captain Mike Noone (Swampscott, MA/Exeter) gave Amherst the lead with a shorthanded goal with two minutes remaining in the period. Junior Rob MacDonald (Walpole, MA/Taft) slid a pass across the crease to Noone, completing a three-on-one break.

Hamilton tied the game three minutes into the second period, but Amherst opened up a two-goal lead inside of a minute with goals by MacDonald (power play) and freshman defenseman Darce Swaggert (Wayzata, MN/Blake). Swaggert's was his first collegiate goal.

Amherst ran the lead to 6-3 in the third period on a goal by freshman forward Chris Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA/Springfield Cathedral). Hamilton pressed hard in the third, and got one goal back at 9:35, but Amherst played solid defense and grinded out the clock to gain the win. Junior goalie Chris Addesa (Andover, MA/Exeter) made 34 saves in the winning effort.

Amherst betters its record to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the ECAC-East, while Hamilton falls to 1-2-1, 1-1-1 ECAC-East.

The Jeffs will host archrival Williams tomorrow at 3:00pm for bragging rights as the only 4-0 team in the ECAC-East, while Hamilton will face the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 4:30pm.
