Keene State Upsets Amherst, 88-81

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- An inspired Keene State basketball team upset top-seeded Amherst College, 88-81, in the semifinals of the ECAC Tournament in LeFrak Gymnasium. The fifth-seeded Owls (21-8) will face second-seeded Colby-Sawyer (24-4) in the Championship game on Sunday at 2:00pm.

Despite 17 first half points by Pat Mulvey (Rye, NH), the Lord Jeffs trailed 42-35 at the break. Keene State continued its hot shooting at the start of the second half, and the Owls led by as much as 12 before the Jeffs began their comeback. A 3-pointer by Mulvey brought Amherst within one, 55-54, with 12:39 to play, and the Jeffs took the lead on a layup by senior tri-captain Billy Skorupski (North Hatfield, MA) at the 12-minute mark. However, a 3-pointer by Fred Fieldhouse (Somers, CT) with 11:57 remaining gave the Owls a two point lead, 58-56. Fieldhouse finished with 16 for the game.

The Jeffs would challenge once more after a three-point play by junior Josh Anish (Huntingdon, PA) tied the score at 71-71. A putback by senior tri-captain John Pavelski (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) gave Amherst a 73-71 lead with 5:56 remaining. However, the Jeffs could not stave off the quick Keene State frontcourt, nor the largely pro-Owl crowd. Another 3-pointer by Fieldhouse gave the Owls a lead they would not relinquish, 76-73 with 5:24 left. Keene State shot 60% in the second half and 56% for the game.

Stacy Massiah (Boston, MA) led Keene State with 19 points and added 12 rebounds, while junior Kareem Porter (New York, NY) chipped in 18 points and four assists for the Owls. Mulvey finished with a game-high 26 points, including six 3-pointers, and six rebounds, while Pavelski added 20 in his final game as a Lord Jeff. Amherst concluded the season in its 13th ECAC Tournament appearance with a 20-5 record.

Keene State is making its first post-season appearance since its 1977 NAIA District Five Championship. This is the Owls' first 20-win season since 1977 and their first playing at the Division III level.
