Amherst Defeats Bowdoin in OT

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- John Pavelski (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) tallied 26 points including five 3-pointers to lead Amherst to an 88-83 overtime victory over NESCAC foe Bowdoin. The senior drained a trey at the beginning of each period as the Jeffs move to 16-2 overall, 5-2 NESCAC. Bowdoin falls to 11-8 overall.

The Polar Bears made three steals in the first half toward a 40-35 lead at the break behind the sharp-shooting of Wil Smith (Jacksonville, FL), who posted 11 of his 15 points in the last five minutes of the first half. But, catalyzed by a pair of 3's by Pat Mulvey (Rye, NH), Amherst mounted a 14-4 run midway through the second half as the Jeffs took their biggest lead of six on a three-point-play by sophomore Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA).

Hugh Coleman (Lynn, MA) hit his second basket of the day with 34.5 seconds left in regulation to cut the Jeff lead to one at 72-71. While senior tri-captain Julian Rowand (Washington, DC) hit a pair of free throws to extend the Amherst advantage to three, Coleman sank another trey with 13.5 on the clock. A Mulvey miss from behind the arc sent the game into overtime with the score tied 74-74. Both Mulvey and Pavelski had 14 in the second half in the Lord Jeff comeback while Polar Bear David Lovely (Milton, MA) sank 15 of his team-high 22 in the second period.

Amherst made 11 of 14 free throws in the extra period to seal the victory.
