Hamilton Defeats Amherst, 73-72

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Max Stroman (Syracuse, NY) sank a free throw with just three ticks left on the game clock to hand Hamilton a 73-72 victory over host Amherst College. The NESCAC rivals had battled through 14 lead changes and nine ties, including a three-point play by Amherst junior Josh Anish (Huntingdon, PA) to give the Jeffs a 72-70 edge with 1:10 on the clock. Michael Schantz (Sharon, MA), the NESCAC's leading scorer and rebounder, tied the game at 72 on a pair of free throws with 62 seconds to play before Stroman notched the game-winner. Amherst had inbounded the ball and gotten it past halfcourt, but a desperation shot went wide right for the Continental victory.

Hamilton had led through most of the first half as Jon Schmiegel (Wantagh, NY) tallied 14 of his game-high 23 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. But the sharp-shooting of guards Pat Mulvey (Rye, NH - 19 pts), Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA - 8 pts) and Chris Ingraham (Tuscon, AZ - 12 pts) pulled Amherst ahead for the first time at the 6:17 mark in the first toward a 39-37 lead at the break.

Schmiegel's fourth successful three-point play regained the lead for Hamilton early in the second. The Continentals would lead by as much as eight. Schmiegel also pulled down 18 rebounds, including 10 in the second half. Quattlebaum led the Jeffs on the glass with 10 boards, along with making three steals for Amherst.

Hamilton improves to 10-7 overall, 2-2 in the NESCAC while Amherst falls to 14-2, 3-2 NESCAC. The Jeffs are idle until their next NESCAC contest, a re-match of last year's NCAA first round game as Colby travels to Amherst on Friday night.
