Amherst Edges Out Wheaton, 89-87

AMHERST, Masachusetts -- Billy Skorupski (North Hatfield, MA) sank two of his ten free throws, all in the second half, to seal an 89-87 victory over Wheaton. The Lyons missed what would have been the tying shot just before the final buzzer as Wheaton falls to 3-7 for the season and Amherst improves to 8-0.

Both teams traded baskets early in the game before Amherst mounted a 14-2 run in the first half behind the perimeter shooting of Pat Mulvey (Rye, NH). Wheaton fought back to within four at the half with a triplet of three-pointers by Dave Pranksky (Cabot, VT) and Bill O'Brien (Tauton, MA).

Lyon foul trouble early in the second half opened up a 14-point lead for Amherst as Skorupski went to the line eight times in a three minute span. Wheaton capitalized on second-chance opportunities late in the game to chip away at the Lord Jeff lead, tying the match at 87 on a putback by O'Brien. The guard finished as one of five Lyons in double figures. O'Brien registered 14, along with Pranksy (18), Lloyd Palmer (Dorchester, MA - 16), Harrison Bush (Dorchester, MA - 15) and Justing Lefkowski (Torrington, CT - 11).

John Pavelski (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) led the Jeffs with 17 points and nine rebounds while point guard Caith Chapman (Maumee, OH) dished out a career high eight assists. The Jeffs will next host Little III rival Wesleyan on Thursday at 7:30pm.
