AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Amherst College finished the winter season ranked 10th in the race for the Sears Directors' Cup, administered by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and sponsored by Sears. These standings include team finishes in NCAA-sponsored championships in the sports of women's basketball, men's basketball, fencing, men's ice hockey, rifle, skiing, women's swimming and diving, men's swimming and diving, women's indoor track and field, men's indoor track and field, and wrestling, along with seven fall sports.
Amherst added 120 points to its fall totals behind the performances of four teams. Women's swimming and diving finished 7th in the nation while their male counterparts claimed a 19th-place finish as twelve swimmers earned All-America honors by placing among the top-16 in relay and individual events. Single athletes scored for the men's and women's indoor track teams as junior Rob Mitchell (Worcester, VT) won the national championship in the 800 and placed 4th in the 1500, and sophomore Nicole Campbell (Brooklyn, NY) finished 3rd in the triple jump. The men claimed a 6th place team finish, while the women placed 23rd overall.
Last year, Amherst finished seventh overall for Division III institutions. Amherst had earned its fall standing behind the Final Four and National Quarterfinal finishes of its men's and women's soccer teams, respectively.
A new scoring structure was implemented this year in which points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports - nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points (last year, first place was worth 64 points), while second place is worth 80 points (exceptions include brackets of eight and fewer teams).
There are four Sears Directors' Cup Awards, one to honor the institution with the best all-around athletics program in each of the NCAA's Divisions I, II, III and the NAIA. It is the first-ever cross-sectional all-sports national recogntion award for men and women.
