AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Ivy Pochoda (Brooklyn, NY) of Harvard University and Marcus Cowie (Norfolk, England) of Trinity College earned national championships in women's and men's squash on the newly renovated Davenport Squash Courts in Amherst, Massachusetts. This is the second appearance in the championship match for both student-athletes.
Third-seeded Pochoda defeated 1996 Champion and 1997 runner-up Jessica DiMauro (Toronto, Ontario) of the University of Pennsylvania in four games for the USWISRA Singles Championship. While second-ranked DiMauro claimed the first game 9-2, Pochoda fought back in the second with a 10-8 win before cruising to the title 9-1, 9-4. This was a re-match of the 1996 championship final. Pochoda had upset top-seeded freshman Julia Beaver (Brooklyn, NY) of Princeton University in the semifinals, while DiMauro defeated fourth-ranked Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) of Trinity in the other semifinal.
Cowie repeats as the NISRA Singles Champion, edging out 1996 Champion Daniel Ezra (London, England) of Harvard University for both titles. Top-seeded Ezra took a one-game lead with a 15-7 victory before second-ranked Cowie won the next three, 15-2, 15-10, 15-13. Cowie had defeated third-seeded David McNeely (Newtown Square, PA) of Amherst College in the semifinals to reach the Championship round, while Ezra ousted fourth-ranked Amir Give'on (Herzlia, Israel) of Princeton in the other semifinal. The sophomore is the first man to win back-to-back titles since Adrian Ezra of Harvard University in 1993-94.
Also claiming titles were four consolation draw winners. Vineet Asthana of Franklin and Marshall won the men's feed-in consolaton while Blair Irwin of Princeton won the women's feed-in consolation to finish 9th in the tournament. Devraj Roy of Yale University and Liz Kelly of Princeton won the men's and women's consolation draws, respectively.
