Amherst Defeats Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Connecticut -- Junior Heidi Cline (Andover, MA) scored four goals to lead Amherst College to a 12-6 win over Connecticut College in women's lacrosse this afternoon at Connecticut College.

Cline scored two of her four goals in the first half to help Amherst (4-2) build a 5-1 lead at the half. Sophomore Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, MA) helped Amherst increase its lead to 6-1 on her second of three goals on the day with 25:07 remaining.

Conn (2-3), however, rallied to score five of the next six goals and when sophomore Meghan Welch (Framingham, MA) scored her third goal of the afternoon the Camels trailed 7-6 with 10:57 to play.

Junior Jen Corso (Collingsworth, NJ) and Cline then realed off back-to-back goals in a span of 1:20 to give Amherst a 9-6 lead with 9:27 to play. The Amherst defense, which limited the Camels to 13 shots, held Conn scoreless for the final 10:57 in prevailing 12-6. The Lord Jeffs managed 27 shots on goal.

Amanda Baltzley (Sherborn, MA), making her first start of the season for Conn, had 20 saves while Sarah Evans (Columbus, OH) had seven stops for Amherst.

Game Notes: Amherst scored four goals over a span of 4:27 late in the first half to extend a 5-3 advantage to 9-3 at intermission. The closest Wesleyan got in the second half was five (10-5, 25:29 to go) before Amherst ran off another four straight in a 3:30 span for a 14-5 lead with 18:30 to play. Heather Kestner notched her 100th career goal as she scored three of the four goals during that stretch. Amherst leads the series v. Wesleyan 12-10 and has won the last four meetings. Amherst is ranked 14th nationally in Division III.
