Permut, Kestner Named All-American

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Two members of the Amherst College women's lacrosse team were named All-Americans by the United States Women's Lacrosse Association, Inc. (USWLA). They are among the top 43 Division III collegiate women's lacrosse players in the nation and hail from 27 colleges and universities.

Irene Permut (Wilmington, DE) earned First Team honors as a midfielder. The junior contributed six goals and eight assists and led the team with 45 ground balls. Permut's tenacious defense also caused a team-leading 41 turnovers while committing only 12. Also an All-American field hockey player, Permut has also been named Academic All-District for both sports.

Heather Kestner (Wilmington, DE) claims Second Team recognition as a tri-captain of the 1998 squad. The midfielder finished her career with 126 goals, the second-most in Amherst women's lacrosse history, and 163 points for third on the all-time scoring list. Tallying nine of her 46 goals this season in the semis and finals of the ECAC Championship, Kestner earned Tournament MVP honors along with NESN Athlete of the Week recognition. The midfielder also claimed NESCAC Player of the Week honors after notching a hat trick, including the game-winner, against archrival Williams to spoil the Ephs' undefeated season and win Amherst's first Little III title since 1985.

Amherst women's lacrosse finished with a 12-3 record, tying last year's mark of most wins in a single season. Making its fourth-straight post-season appearance, the team repeated as ECAC Division III New England Champions after winning the program's first-ever title last year.
