AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Heather Kestner (Wilmington, DE), a senior tri-captain of the Amherst College women's lacrosse team, was selected as the Athlete of the Week by the New England Sports Network (NESN), based both in Boston and at Springfield College. This is the seventh award bestowed this season upon an outstanding athlete, regardless of sport.
Kestner led Amherst College to its second-straight ECAC Division III New England Title with a four-goal, one assist performance in the Championship game. Trailing second-seeded Bowdoin 8-7 in overtime, the midfielder fired off her third goal of the day to tie the match at 8-8 with 1:33 left in the extra stanza. With just 40 ticks left on the clock, Kestner notched the game-winner with a shot over her right shoulder for the 9-8 overtime victory.
Facing Tufts in the semifinals, the tri-captain posted a five goals, including four in the second half, as Amherst registered a 14-12 win at Pratt Field. Kestner finished the weekend with nine goals and two assists, and she was named the ECAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Kestner closes out her career as Amherst's third most prolific scorer with 163 points in her career. Bolstered by a pair of six-goal games, the midfielder broke the 100-goal mark in her senior season, and she finished with 126 over four years and second in career goals.
Amherst women's lacrosse closed out the 1998 season with a 12-3 record, tying its 1997 mark of most wins in a single season. The Class of 1998 will graduate with four post-season appearances, including an NCAA showing in 1996 and three trips to the ECAC Championship game.
NESN will run a short profile of Kestner during its "Best of the Week" section of Front Row. The segment will air six times this Friday and one additional time on Sunday. She will also be featured on both the NESN webstie (http://www.nesn.com/index.html) and on the On-C@mpus page (http://www.spfldcol.edu/champs.nsf).
