Middlebury Defeats Amherst, 16-9

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Rookie Betsy Wheeler (Wenham, MA) tallied four goals and an assist in the second half to lead defending national champion Middlebury College (4-0) to a 16-9 victory over Amherst College (2-2) on Pratt Field. The Panthers scored 11 goals, including nine straight, in the second half after only a 5-4 advantage at the break.

Amherst had taken a 1-0 lead on its first possession with a goal by senior captain Heather Kestner (Wilmington, DE), 2:31 into the match. The Panthers responded with four scores, including a pair by senior captain Lina Chickering (Greenwich, CT), to take a 4-1 lead. Amherst rattled off three of its own to tie the game at 4-4 on a goal by sophomore Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, MA) 4:43 before the break. Junior Kully Hagerman (Lakeville, CT) closed out the first with a Panther score with 36 seconds left in the half.

Stechenberg again tied the match with her second goal just 44 seconds into the second, but Middlebury went on a 9-0 run over 16 minutes to seal the victory. Amherst keeper Sarah Evans (Columbus, OH) made 11 stops on 27 Panther shots, while senior captain Emily Bracken (Rye, NY) had 10 saves for Middlebury.

Amherst travels to Springfield for a 7:00pm match on Tuesday, while Middlebury next hosts Union at 3:30pm on Tuesday, April 7th.
