Bridgewater State Defeats Amherst (1-0) to Win NCAA Division III New England Championship

BRIDGEWATER, Massachusetts -- Bridgewater State College (35-9) defeated Amherst College 1-0 in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Women's Softball New England Regionals. The winner advances to the NCAA Championship Finals in Salem, Virginia, May 14-18. The Finals is an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. It will be Bridgewater State's second trip to the Championship finals, with its first coming in 1994.

Bridgewater was bolstered by the four-hit pitching of freshman Tammy Webber (32-5) in the 1-0 shutout. Bridgewater scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Angela Vecchione led off with a triple to right center and came home on an RBI single by Jamie Roach.

Amherst (31-8) advanced to the finals earlier in the day when the Jeffs came from behind in dramatic fashion in the 10th inning to defeat Wheaton College 4-3. Both teams scored two runs in the ninth inning to take it into the tenth. Wheaton shortstop Jessica Johnson then led off the inning with a home run to left field. Amherst came right back in their half with shortstop Liza Feldman hitting an RBI double to centerfield to score two runs to win the game. Wheaton ended its season at 38-12.
