AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA), a sophomore pitcher for the Amherst College softball team, was named to the 1998 Division III All-New England Softball Second Team by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and a vote of member coaches. The squad recognizes the 22 most outstanding players, who hail from 12 institutions. NCAA New England Regional Champion Bridgewater State College boasts four honorees, including the Player of the Year.
Schwarting makes her second appearance as an All-New England Selection. The sophomore led the Jeffs both on the mound and at the plate as Amherst compiled a 31-8 record in its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in its fourth year as a varsity program. The right-hander compiled an 18-5 record with three saves while boasting a 1.49 ERA. Schwarting threw 109 strikeouts while walking only 21 in 150.0 innings of work, including 10 K games against Norwich and Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She also registered only the second no-hitter in Amherst softball history, an 8-0 victory over Elms College during spring training.
At the plate, Schwarting finished with a .406 average with 40 runs and 16 RBI in the lead-off spot. In addition to stealing 23 bases in 27 attempts, Schwarting was named to the NCAA New England Regional All-Tournament Team and has earned All-NESCAC recognition after claiming Player of the Week honors twice this season.
Schwarting boasts a 31-8 record, 1.22 ERA and .390 batting average in two years.
