AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Liza Feldman (Sudbury, MA), a sophomore shortstop for the Amherst College softball team, was named Player of the Week by the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) for her outstanding performance in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament. This is the fourth student-athlete from Amherst to earn NESCAC Player of the Week honors this spring.
Feldman pounded a double into centerfield in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally Amherst from a 3-2 deficit to a 4-3 victory over Wheaton College, last year's regional champion. As the No. 5 seed in the tournament, Amherst held the third-seeded Lyons scoreless until the 9th inning when Wheaton took a 2-0 lead. Amherst responded with four hits in the bottom of the 9th, including a single by Feldman, who scored the tying run to force another inning. With two out and two on, Feldman's double propelled the Jeffs into the Championship game of the New England Regional.
Amherst softball concluded its finest season ever with a 31-8 mark and its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In only their fourth year as a varsity program, the Jeffs finished the regular season as the Little III Champions and with a 28-6 record. Invited to the five-team regional tournament, Amherst twice disposed of NESCAC rival Tufts and eliminated Wheaton from the weekend. The Jeffs faced top-seed Bridgewater State in the regional championship, where the host claimed a 1-0 win and a berth in the National Championship in Salem, Virginia.
In recognition of individual performances in the regional, four Lord Jeffs were named to the New England All-Tournament Team. Feldman was named the most outstanding shortstop in the five-team regional, and she was joined by first baseman Darcy Sweeney (Keene, NH), outfielder Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA) and pitcher Jen Shea (Hatfield, MA).
