Amherst Sweeps Smith in Doubleheader

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Allison Schwarting (Los Angeles, CA) went 4-for-7 with four runs to lead Amherst College (14-4) to a sweep of Pioneer Valley rival Smith College (8-3) in a softball doubleheader at Hill Field. The sophomore also pitched 9.0 innings, where she struck out seven and allowed two runs.

The Jeffs held Smith to three hits in game one as they took advantage of six Pioneer errors and stole five bases for a 5-0 win, Amherst's fifth shutout of the year.

In game two, Schwarting and junior Vicki Gonzalez (Miami, FL) gave Amherst a 2-0 lead after the first before Smith tied the game off singles by Elizabeth Wolfe (Columbia, SC) and Christine Patterson (Waterford, CT) in the top of the third. The Jeffs answered in the bottom of the inning to send Schwarting and Gonzalez around the bases again. A single by Katie Winger (Kansas City, MO) drove home Bonnie Benson (Winchester, MA) in the sixth before Winger's run tied the game at four. Benson went 3-for-3 in game two. Rinaldi pounded a triple deep into centerfield in the bottom of the sixth, and the rightfielder came home on an overthrow to third for the game-winning run.

Amherst next hosts a doubleheader against Norwich at 12:00pm in Saturday.
