Trinity Splits with Amherst

HARTFORD, Connecticut -- Trinity freshman Jack Richardson singled in sophomore Jim Klocek in the bottom of the 7th inning to give Trinity College a 14-13 win in the second game of a doubleheader with Amherst College to manage a split in the two games.

Amherst junior righthander Mike Sweeney tossed a three-hitter, striking out six, and senior Mike Sullivan had three hits and two runs batted in, including a solo homor to open the game.

Trinity pounded out 20 hits in the second game, including four hits and five at-bats by Klocek and senior Christian Burchfield. Sophomore Brendan Moss pitched two innings of scoreless relief for his first win of the season.

Amherst Stuns Westfield State, 18-5

WESTFIELD, Massachusetts -- Amherst scored 10 runs off six Westfield State errors in the seventh inning to defeat the host owls 18-5. Sophomore third baseman Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) was awarded first on interference by the catcher as he led-off the inning and nine runs before the first out was made. Junior second baseman Mike Grant (Mendon, MA) scored two of his four runs in the seventh as Amherst registered only five hits and one earned run in the inning.

Westfield State had led 5-3 after five innings on eight hits, including a two-run homer by Chris Malloy (Stow, MA) in the bottom of the fifth. Junior designated hitter Greg Berchelmann (St. Louis, MO) answered with a two-run shot of his own in the top of the sixth as Amherst entered the seventh inning with just a 6-5 lead.

Andy Ditchfield (Lebanon, NH) earned the win with six innings of work, and rookie Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) closed out the game with five strikeouts in 12 batters faced. Downes allowed only one hit in the final three innings.
