AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Michael St. Clair (East Longmeadow, MA) ripped a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning as Amherst College (19-8) headed toward a 13-3 victory over Little III rival Wesleyan University (14-14). This is the junior's eighth homer of the season.
The Jeffs led by as much as 11-2 after sophomore third baseman Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) shot a three-run homer over the right field fence in the bottom of the third. Rookie shortstop Jordan Krall went 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs as Amherst registered 20 hits in eight innings.
Wesleyan had cut the Amherst advantage to 6-2 when senior first baseman Mark Traina (Chatham, MA) and senior shortstop Chris Millsback (Meriden, CT) led off the second with a pair of hits and were driven home by junior outfielder Jon Epstein (Wellesley, MA). Senior second baseman Brian Flanagan (Andover, MA) scored the final run after doubling to lead off the sixth and coming home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Eric Carmody (Phoenix, AZ).
Jon Cross (Chevy Chase, MD) earns the win for Amherst after striking out six Cardinals in six innings. Cross had also posted a complete-game win, 6-1, at Wesleyan last Saturday. Matt Feeney (Milton, MA) takes the loss for Wesleyan.
Amherst next hosts Little III rival Williams in a doubleheader that will decide the Little III title at 1:00pm on Saturday. Wesleyan will travel to Bowdoin on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm.
