AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Designated hitter George Davis (Proctor, VT) pounded a three-run homer in the top of the eighth to lead Eastern Connecticut State University (19-6), ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 9 in the nation, to a 5-3 victory over Amherst College (15-5), the fifth-ranked team in the region. Eastern Connecticut next hosts Nichols College at 4:00pm tomorrow while Amherst travels to top-rated Brandeis (19-4) for a 1:00pm showdown on Sunday.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the third when senior Chris D'Amato (Bristol, CT) came home on a single by fellow captain Jon Gersz (Wallingford, CT) single. A solo homer by junior Lance Podlesney (Marlboro, MA) handed Eastern Connecticut a 2-0 edge after four innings.
Amherst tied the match in the bottom of the sixth after sophomore Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) claimed 1st on the lone Warrior error of the day. A single by senior Josh Carroll (Winchester, MA) drove the third-baseman home, and Carroll would score on a fielder's choice two batters later. Rookie shortstop Jordan Krall (Encino, CA) tripled in the Amherst seventh as the Jeffs took the lead, 3-2, after a sacrifice fly by senior co-captain Mike Sullivan (Andover, MA).
Podlesney and Glenn Lungarini (Oxford, CT) each singled to lead off the eighth before Davis's sixth home run of the season drove both home for the victory.
