Amherst Splits with Suffolk

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Amherst College (14-4) split a doubleheader with Suffolk University (16-7) on Hitchcock Field in Amherst Massachusetts. The Jeffs claimed game one with a 9-6 victory before Suffolk won game two, 8-4.

Game One Michael St. Clair (East Longmeadow, MA) drove in four runs to lead Amherst to a 9-6 victory over Suffolk. The junior transfer from New Hampshire notched his sixth homer, a two run shot, in the bottom of the third toward an 8-0 lead after four innings. The Rams ralled behind three Lord Jeff errors in the top of the fifth and the seventh for three runs in each inning. Joe Robillard (Arlington, MA) went 2-for-3 for Suffolk, while left-hander Jon Cross (Chevy Chase, MD) struck out five Rams in 6.1 innings of work.

Game Two Suffolk took a 5-0 lead after one inning with the help of two walks and a hit pitch on three successive batters. Gabriel Soto (Charlestown, MA) and Mike Butts (Plymouth, MA) each drove in a pair of runs in the first. Rookie centerfielder Jared Leach (North Kingston, RI) went 4-for-4 in game two. Amherst pitcher Graham Callaghan (Burlington, CT) struck out six Rams in five innings of relief.
