AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Michael St. Clair (East Longmeadow, MA) scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch as Amherst outlasted Western New England College in just under six innings of baseball on Hitchcock Field. Amherst was batting in the bottom of the sixth with one out when the game was called because of rain.
The Jeffs scored in the bottom of the 4th when leftfielder Josh Carroll (Winchester, MA) came home on an RBI single by catcher Dan Blednick (Melville, NY). Western New England answered in the top of the 6th when second-baseman Ryan Melle (Pittsfield, MA) doubled into centerfield before scoring two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Todd Watson (Framingham, MA). St. Clair led off the bottom of the 6th with a triple into deep centerfield.
Junior Andy Ditchfield (Lebanon, NH) earned the win for Amherst as he struck out five and allowed only two hits. Rookie Kurt Bernhard (Lawrenceville, NJ) got the loss for the Golden Bears, striking out four but allowing 10 hits.
Amherst improves to 10-2 and will travel to Trinity College for a doubleheader on Saturday while Western New England falls to 0-6.
