BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College football team received an all-around effort from senior captain Kevin Saxton (Palo Alto, CA), helping the Polar Bears upset Amherst, 24-16. From his defensive end position, Saxton made six tackles and constantly pressured the Amherst quarterback. Saxton also played one snap on offense, catching a 4-yard pass for the go ahead score.
Bowdoin (1-1) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with a Tim Lawson (S. Portland, ME) eleven-yard run and a 33-yard field goal by Alex Tatum (Acton, MA). Amherst (1-1) answered in the second quarter on a Darin Byrne (Winchester, MA) two-yard plunge and a 22-yard Liam Fleming (Braintree, MA) field goal.
The two teams would head into halftime at 10 apiece before Saxton caught his touchdown from Hayes MacArthur (Chicago, IL). Byrne muscled his way in from the one-yard line to get the Lord Jeffs to within one, but Fleming's extra-point clanged the upright.
Lawson put the finishing touches on the game when he caught a screen pass from MacArthur and rumbled 28-yards for the final touchdown of the afternoon.
Mike Sweeney (Keene, NH) completed 13-of-39 passes for 200 yards for Amherst with three critical interceptions while his counterpart, MacArthur, connected on 9-of-21 attempts for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Chris Houston (Winslow, ME) led the Polar Bear rushing attack with 64 yards while Darin Byrne put on an offense attack of his own, compiling 64 yards on the ground and caught seven passes for 135 yards.
