1998 NCAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL 1st ROUND RESULTS
WELLESLEY, Massachusetts -- The #3 seed Amherst College and #5 seed Eastern Connecticut State University advanced to the Semi-Final Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Regional Championship tonight, at Wellesley College.
Amherst College (28-5) went the distance with #6 seed MIT (26-10), defeating the Engineers in five games (14-16, 15-4, 15-7, 7-15, 15-13). The teams were tied at 13 points in the fifth game, but Amherst's Kristen Edgar and Erica Hewes both added two straight kills to advance into the Semi-Finals Round by a score of 3-2. Amherst was led by freshman Erica Hewes (Woodside, CA) and senior Nell Berens (Hamilton, MI) who recorded 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Meredith DeMeules (Los Angeles, CA) set-up 41 of Amherst's 64 kills, while adding 33 digs defensively. MIT received tremendous efforts from teammates Betsy Sailhammer (North Oaks, MN- 24 kills, 30 digs), Michelle Fox (Grand Island, NE- 21 kills and 28 digs), and Christina Almodovar (New City, NY- 14 kills, 16 digs). Amherst will face #2 seed Williams College (27-5) tonight at 5:00 p.m. at the Wellesley College Keohane Sports Center.
