Amherst Nips Bowdoin in Overtime

Diggs's Goal Lifts Lord Jeffs

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Amherst College senior Matt Diggs (Eden Prairie, MN) tipped home a loose ball into the Bowdoin net with seven minutes left in the second overtime period, giving the Lord Jeffs a 1-0 victory over the Polar Bears Saturday afternoon. Amherst entered the game ranked first in New England and third in the nation while Bowdoin was seventh in the region.

Bowdoin (3-2) controlled much of the first half but could not beat Amherst goalie Kevin Larner (Short Hills, N.J.). Bowdoin sophomore Pat Hultgren (Storrs, CT) had the Polar Bears best bid in the second half, but his attempt nailed the post and deflected back into play.

The game was even in the second frame with both teams going scoreless, setting up the overtime and Diggs's heroics. Larner made 11 saves in the game for Amherst (5-0) while Bowdoin goalie Tom Casarella (Ashford, CT) made eight stops.
