Men's Hockey Defeats New England 8-3

Charlie Blyth '99 and Matt Sather '97 had two goals and three assists each to lead Amherst College to its first win after their ECAC East Championship 1996 season. In their season opener, the Jeffs defeated New England College by an 8-3 margin, jumping out to as much as a 6-1 lead after the first period.

Rob MacDonald '99 added three assists and rookie Buster Nelson '00 had two goals to bolster the Jeff attack. Jeff goalie Joe Branca, last year's ECAC tournament MVP made 41 quick-reflex saves.

The Pilgrims turned up the offensive pressure in the third period, scoring two of their three goals within two minutes of each other. Freshman Shawn Whitehead led the New England offense with two assists.
