AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Tufts had four players in double digits as the Jumbos posted their second-straight upset of a top-3 team with an 88-81 win at Amherst. Tufts never trailed as they jumped out to a 21-13 lead with 9:58 left in the first off of an 8-0 run. Amherst's Chris Akers came alive before the break with five straight points to cut the Jumbo lead to 1, but a pair of Dan Ragsdale free throws gave Tufts a 38-35 edge at the break.
The Jumbos capitalized on Amherst fouls and 8-19 shooting from behind the arc in the second half to extend the lead to as much as 13 after a pair of long-range threes from Dave Cunningham. But Amherst tri-captain Jamal Wilson mounted a 10-2 run over three minutes to move within 67-65 with 6:20 to play. But Wilson, who had 27 of his 31 points in the second half wasn't enough as the clock wound down. Forced to foul, Brian Skerry sank a perfect 8-8 from the stripe in the closing two minutes to round out the game. Three Wilson treys in the last minute of play took the final to 88-81.
Tufts betters its record to 17-5 with back-to-back wins over No. 2-ranked Colby and No. 3 Amherst. The Jumbos play again at Brandeis on Thursday before rounding out the season at Connecticut College on Saturday.
Amherst falls to 19-4 and prepare for their regular season finale this Saturday against Skidmore in Amherst.
