Amherst Earns NCAA Bid

4th-Seeded Jeffs Start Play in Second Straight NCAA Tournament on Thursday

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Amherst College Baseball earned its second straight bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 25-4 regular season record. Ranked No. 1 in New England No. 7 in the country by the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll, the Jeffs are seeded fourth in the Northeast Region. Tournament play begins on Thursday and the double-elimination format will continue through Saturday. Only one of the four teams in the region will advance to the College World Series, held from Saturday, May 24 - Wednesday, May 28 in Salem, Virginia.

The Jeffs head into the post-season with a six-game win-streak. Centerfielder Dan Jin (Berkeley, CA) leads the team with a .476 batting average and 22 stolen bases for the year, while designated hitter Greg Berchelmann (St. Louis, MO) has driven in 45 runs in his sophomore season. Junior Josh Carroll (Winchester, MA) has had a hot bat late in the season, knocking four of his team-leading seven home runs out of the park in the last five games.

On the mound, Co-Captain Ian Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) has been steady in relief, striking out 39 batters in 48.0 innings with a 2.81 ERA. Sophomores Mike Sweeney (Keene, NH) and Graham Callaghan (Burlington, CT), along with lefthander Jon Cross (Chevy Chase, MD) have also been key to the Jeffs' success, keeping the team ERA among the ten-best in the nation at 2.87.

Amherst is 2-1 against competition in the Northeast Region, and 3-2 against the NCAA Tournament field. The Jeffs fell 8-7 to Southern Maine during Spring Training, but they handily defeated Brandeis (4-1) and Eastern Connecticut State University (12-5) midway through the season. Amherst will meet Brandeis on Thursday at 3:30pm on Hadlock Field, home of the AA Miami Seadogs in Portland, Maine.
