AMHERST, Massachusetts -- After upsetting last week's second and third best teams in the region, Amherst College baseball rises from No. 4 to the No. 1 spot in the New England College Baseball Coaches Poll. Following a 19-0 rout at Fitchburg tonight, the Jeffs boast a 16-3 record as the No. 13 team in the nation, moving up seven places from No. 20 last week.
Amherst posted a 2-0 record last week with victories over then No. 3 Brandeis (4-1) and then No. 2 Eastern Connecticut State University (12-5). The Jeffs have put up big numbers behind the bats of centerfielder Dan Jin (Berkeley, CA) and DH Greg Berchelmann (St. Louis, MO). The two combined for eight hits, seven RBI and six runs including a home run by each at ECSU. Ian Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) has been solid on the mound, compiling a 5-2 record with a 2.88 ERA in 34.1 innings pitched.
The senior co-captain is scheduled to start in the Jeffs' first Little III contest against Williams tomorrow at 3:30pm in Amherst. The Ephs enter the game with an 18-4-1 record as the No. 6 team in the region.
