Amherst Blanks Bowdoin, 2-0
Jeffs Advance to New England Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Matt Diggs (Seattle, WA) posted a pair of goals to lead Amherst to a 2-0 victory over Bowdoin College in the NCAA New England Regional Semifinal. The Jeffs advance to the New England Championship game against the winner of Plymouth State-Wheaton in a 12:00pm kickoff on Wednesday, November 19 in Brunswick, Maine. This is the third time in three appearances that the Jeffs have reached the regional final

Amherst controlled the tempo of much of the match, and the Jeffs took advantage of slippery conditions in Bowdoin territory during the first half. Diggs poked in his first goal in the 19th minute past Polar Bear keeper Tom Casarella (Ashford, CT), who had slipped on the ice blanketing the south end of the field. Amherst took a 7-6 shot advantage and 1-0 lead on the scoreboard into halftime.

Diggs notched his second score off a feed from senior co-captain Tim Christian (Agawam, MA) at midfield. The junior blasted his sixth goal of the season into the right corner of the net past a diving keeper.

"The conditions weren't ideal, but they were the same for both teams," noted Bowdoin Head Coach Tim Gilbride. "The ice made it tough to defend in the first half, and that contributed to that first goal. But mistakes were bound to happen, and Amherst took advantage of that."

"One great advantage," mused Amherst Head Coach Peter Gooding, "was that we played our two toughest games - Williams and Middlebury in the first round - in the last week and a half while Bowdoin hadn't played in two weeks."

Host Bowdoin concludes their 1997 campaign with a 11-4 record in the Polar Bears' first-ever NCAA appearance. The Jeffs rise to 10-4-2 with their most NCAA Tournament wins (2) in their three trips to national championship.
