AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Darin Byrne (Winchester, MA) was named to the New England Division III Honor Roll by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for his performance yesterday in a 22-17 victory over Middlebury. This is the first time the junior has received such recognition by the league.
Byrne jumpstarted the Amherst offense in the first half with 16 of his 29 carries and two touchdowns. The running back compiled 129 yards rushing and made two catches for 48 yards, including a 32-yard bomb in the endzone to open the second quarter. He followed up minutes later with a 1-yard run to goal for a 15-0 Amherst lead. The Economics major is the Jeffs' leading rusher after three games, averaging 74-yards per game and 4 per carry.
Teammate Todd Nichols (Skaneateles, NY) also received league recognition as both the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week. The free safety posted his second three-interception game in his career, including one in the endzone to rob the Panthers of a touchdown. In addition, the junior recovered a fumble, broke up a pass and registered five tackles (three solo).
The Jeffs travel to Waterville, Maine on Saturday, October 11 for a meeting with Colby College. Last year Amherst blanked the White Mules 34-0 in Massachusetts. Amherst leads the series 15-4-1.
