AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, MA), a sophomore forward for the Amherst College field hockey team, was named Player of the Week by the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) for the week ending October 19, 1997. This is the first time an Amherst player has received this honor this season.
Amherst claimed a come-from-behind victory over Wesleyan on Saturday to force a three-way tie for the Little III title among Amherst, Wesleyan and Williams. Trailing the Cardinals 2-0 in the waning minutes of regulation Stechenberg sparked the Amherst comeback with the fourth goal of her sophomore season with just 6:17 on the clock. Refusing to fail in defense of their 1996 Little III crown, the Jeffs tallied an equalizer three minutes later to force the match into sudden death. A Stechenberg feed to rookie Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, NH) five minutes into extra time notched the game-winner as Amherst claimed its ninth win of the season.
The Jeffs are next active on Saturday at Tufts in an 11:00am matchup. Amherst posts a 9-2 record to date.
In addition to Stechenberg's honors, Katie Hersey (Westford, MA) earned NESCAC Player of the Week standing for women's soccer as she notched three goals and an assist for the week. Her 11 shots against Wesleyan led the game as she blasted the game-winner in overtime for the ninth goal of her junior season in another late-game comeback over Wesleyan. Women's soccer will also play next at Tufts at 11:00am on Saturday.
